The Alleyway

Hear the patter of your feet.
Tip tap of your footfall,
on entering the narrow space.

Shadows shrink into corners.
Confidence in a stride.
The dark lamp light of night.

A brief detour,
changing fates,
paving routes to goals.

Assured steps,
echoed utterance in the wake,
crossing the alleyway.

Causing demons to stop,
on the cold streets,
surrender to the inevitable.

Breaching thresholds.
Sweeping in urgently
closing the door.
