| Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it’s all about new writers and new writing. Do you know that every second two hundred and fifty thousand words are being added to sites of all descriptions up and down the net, and that’s just in the UK. People of all ages, cultures and backgrounds are grasping their write, along with infinite pro and non-pro others, and filling the limitless electronic pages of equally infinite virtual volumes. So there are no barriers to writing and no restrictions on what, where and when you write. There is a 'just-blog-it' waterfall of opportunity awaiting everyone who ever wanted to put pen to paper. Of course, those old fashioned enough to even think of scribs and reams, soon realised that not even the chore of finding a pen or shuffling through a draw for paper need stop the flow. Now everyone can join the "text-u-al" revolution. Now everyone new, not-so-new, occasional, indifferent or accomplished can release their words. Now anything from two to a quarter million words can be strung out, rattled off or posted up to represent anything the one or the many want to say. And, no, no, no. I’m not arguing that this is a great thing. That this vast, open ended, spontaneous forum for writing is the answer to anything. I suppose too that this isn’t 'all new' either. People have been able to write what ever they wanted for a very long time now. But, they haven’t been able to get what they write read - truly, nothing can assure that, apart from good writing. And, I guess that's it, all this space for the words, but there is a difference between writing and being a writer. © Howard Walters, 2009 (all rights reserved) |
