Encouraging the Unheard

I hope 2006 will bring us more words from a greater diversity of writers (haves and have nots alike).

One of the reasons for starting Unheard was to provide a channel for those who might otherwise not be Heard. Of course, the reality is that some of those I’d really hoped to encourage to write-in don’t have access to the internet.

Here in the UK, 50% plus of households may be connected but many still have to rely on free means of access, such as that offered by Public Libraries – let alone in parts of countries where people seek survival over the luxury of information and entertainment surfing, discussion, debating or blogging that is the internet.

Like the ‘needs’ hierarchy (Maslow 1954), it’s human to want to eat before we seek to contemplate. How can the writer find the strength to write on an empty stomach?

And yet, by the same token, the hard-knock-life can be the backdrop to a hunger in some which hears them cry ‘still I rise’, as they stir the page with their passionate poetry or prose. Circumstances should be no barrier to personal expression – hence, unheardwords.

So let’s hope that the year sees some - who may not otherwise - break through the barriers. And, perhaps if you can help or assist you too will do your bit to allow those who might otherwise stay quiet, to be heard.
