Writer's Break   7th July 2006
As I come around to contemplating summer holidays, it makes me think about writing holidays. Not the sort where you go away to spend time with other writers for a week or two, with a tutor on hand for good measure. But, the kind where you stop writing for a while and find yourself thinking instead about the things you could be writing.

If to you, this sounds suspiciously like a way of re-packaging 'writers' block', then you could be right (smile). And sometimes the greater the creativity you have surrounding you, the less you can personally feel creative.

I recently returned from a trip to Amsterdam, where I noted that amongst the perceived tacky-ness of ladies for sale, posing in windows and all the dope you can smoke for a Euro; you find a marvellous array of boutiques. Their windows framed imaginatively with rich and varied works of practical and decorative arts and crafts.

All that creativity, set beside those picturesque canals. It made me do a lot of thinking about my writing.
