 Art of Recession

In recessionary times it’s easy, natural even, to become distracted by the material of what we do or don’t have. The world at its most distant and incomprehensible, leads us to the need for personal security, the kind that might be offered by turning inward and narrowing our horizons.

But in such times, perhaps we need to turn outward and see the possibilities offered by the world around us. To slow down and really look. To see the detail in things not always easily seen.

I came across a short piece by an art’s tutor the other day,

'As a result of my art work, I have realized that there is nothing that can match the rewards of perfection, which is personal satisfaction. I intend to carry this attitude on within all areas of my life.'
R Joshi, April 2008

I found these sentiments simple, honest and uplifting. Our creativity can help to restore our faith in our ability to be of value. Art and the creative endeavours of others can help us to put ‘all of this’ into perspective.

'Great art inspires us, brings us together and teaches us about ourselves and the world around us. In short, it makes life better.'
Arts Council England, Sept 2008
