Writing in Threes    1st October 2006

I like organising things into threes, just a strange fact about me I guess, but it seems so natural somehow. The three points of a triangle can sum up the three aspects of a person; mental, physical, spiritual. Or the parts of a life can be described in threes; growing up, growing wise, growing old.

So it occurred to me the other day that you could write in threes. Why not try it I thought. For example you could have:

   A Character

   An Event

   A Relationship

Haven’t we all been characters, facing milestone events, which involve or cause us to reflect upon a relationship?

He was leafless, like a tree subjected to the season after which he had been named.   Autumn looked in their direction as they sang,   'happy birthday'   to him.   He looked through them and they sang through him.   This age, this not so great, great age.   How did you get here without having seen the things you thought you’d see?   And without foliage he felt exposed.   They seemed to be blowing the words, '…ppy birthday to y-o-u…' at him and he had no defence against the gale.   He felt her hand, as she took his, and looked down at the woman who tended his fragile roots.

"I just wanted to say a few words," she was starting out.

'I wish you wouldn't,' he thought.   And as he heard things like, strength   and love   and good   and friend   and generous,   he felt weak and unfaithful.

And there you have it, writing in threes. Why not try it for yourself and if you’d like too, send us the results. It needn’t be the three I’ve suggested. It could be two characters and a relationship. Three friends, three places, three happenings.

Go ahead, the threes of written expression, await you: observe, imagine, write.
